What are the dangers of dental cavities and of the treatments?

What can you do about it?

Find out all that you did not know
about "modern" dentistry and the side effects of integrative treatments.

Another summit is ending, and this is the summary of the entire week of talks and further explanation of oral health and its complications.

According to the speaker Jonathan Landsman, Mike Adams and Robyn Openshaw, failure of conventional medicine is the number one cause of dental problems, by simply “pulling, grinding” and let you get on with what you do, without changing a thing, “and if something else happen, well we will see you then” but also because it is the number one source of metal toxicity in the body (up to 50% mercury is present in amalgam fillings) and brain toxicity.
They also suggest that amalgam fillings “shrink in the tooth”, “virtually always crack” and constantly “bleed into the brain”. Mercury is one of the “most toxic substances on the planet for human beings”

Tooth fillings are very common, and in the UK, it is reported that 84% of adults that have at least one or more filling,  have, on average, 7 fillings.

Types of Amalgams

Amalgam fillings.
These are an amalgamation of various metals, including mercury, silver, tin and copper. They are often referred to "silver" fillings due to their silver looking appearance when they have been placed.

Gold dental fillings.
Made mainly from gold (75%), but also contain various other metals (palladium, silver and a few other minor metals).

Ceramic fillings.
These are made from high grade dental ceramic material by a dental technician (can be made to look extremely natural). The ceramic itself is not inherently strong when compared to gold, however, the ceramic filling is chemically bonded to your tooth very much like a laminated windscreen on your car. By bonding the filling and the tooth together the strength increases exponentially.

Composite fillings.
Made with a tooth coloured putty like material which your dentist applies directly to your tooth. The composition of these composite fillings is extremely complex and includes a light sensitive component which cures to form the hard filling material when a high-powered light is applied to it.

Mercury fillings

The problem is not only that mercury amalgam fillings are toxic and a hazard to human health when placed inside a cavity, they are even more toxic when actually placed or “drilled out” from the mouth, as little pieces can “go down inside your throat”.
The fumes emanating from the amalgam filling (making, melting and drilling) are enough to cause toxicity.
Many dentists do not apply safety measures such as oxygen/ozone; therefore, not protecting their patient and themselves.

“Dentists have one of the highest rate of depression of any profession, one of the highest cancer rate, both linked to mercury exposure.
"[..]
Dentists are sick, with so many dentists with neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, and so much clear evidence that exposure to mercury causes or contribute to risk to neurodegenerative diseases and these dentists who are having their hands go numb and they are having memory loss.” Explains Openshaw adding:
“Why would the ADA (American Dentistry Association), why would the schools that teach dentistry not change their practices, bring this information into light? The more I learnt, the more it became clear that this is an extremely entrenched mega-billion dollar industry that has absolutely no financial motives for any of this information to come to light, that amalgam fillings are hurting us, that root canal are super toxic and may be that radiation during diagnosis is toxic and can cause cancer. They have no incentive to change because there are billions and billions of dollars in infrastructure in many-many dentist offices nationwide.

"The ADA is never going to say: ‘Wow! It was a travesty to put thousands of pounds of mercury in millions of people’s head!’ They are never going to say that, because the minute they do, they face the biggest class-action lawsuit in the history of the world.”
A dentist could lose their licence for telling you that mercury exposure from your amalgam filling might cause you autoimmune disease.

Root canal has also been linked to autoimmunity.

Teeth are made of tiny dental tubule (when added together, they can reach up to 100 metres in length), and dentists, trying to keep a dead tooth in place, “fossilise” it, but cannot kill and prevent bacterial overgrowth from bacteria found in these tiny tubules.
Antibiotics cannot reach these tiny passages within a tooth.
“Those organisms. These bacteria can morph and they become these pleomorphic organisms that can range the body and potentially cause a few degenerative and autoimmune issues (that can become systemic) […], and a rotten jaw that results from having had a root canal (over 10 years ago) and you have to have the tooth pulled. This has been very well documented. […] There are tons of research done.”

Biological Dentistry, like Functional Medicine, look at the body and the mouth holistically. Both are extremely scientific evidence-based practices that relate to the way the mouth and the teeth integrate with the entire body.

“Doctor Thomas Rau did a piece of research where he followed 100 different breast cancer patients and he took a look at what was going on in their mouth, and they all had (except one or two) a root canal on the same meridian of the body that they had breast cancer on. So, in other words a tooth is an organ. A tooth is not a separate, hard little structure that’s sunk deep into your jaw. It is actually a living organ. It has blood system. It’s completely connected to the other systems of the body, and it runs on an energetic meridian in your body. And, it is connected and goes through the breast.

"What he found was that in very nearly 100% of these cases of breast cancer, these women had had a root canal years earlier. They had fossilised, dead tooth, where, perhaps, the dead tooth with all the bacteria that then morphed into more deadly forms of bacteria actually get out and move along these meridian, and can cause problems that are not localised to the tooth.”

Many organs and systems, including each of your teeth, exist on a single shared meridian.
When a tooth is dead, in the case of root canal, the energy on the meridian is blocked and thus preventing the free-flow of energy to the rest of the organs and systems on that meridian.

Note:

Doctor Rau study was conducted using 150 women with breast cancer and found that 147 (98%) had a root canal on a tooth related to the breast meridian.
The potential danger of root canals was discovered in 1905 by Dr. Weston Price, dentist and Director for the Research Institute of the National Dental Association.
One of his research projects involved implanting root canal teeth into rabbits and observing the reactions. A very few showed no evidence of injury or illness, but in most, the implanted area became inflamed or surrounded by pus. The majority of these rabbits died within 10 days. But others developed a thick, fibrous capsule around the teeth and lived for up to a year. Many of these went on to develop degenerative diseases, notably of the heart and kidneys. The same diseases that the human (who’s tooth was extracted from) died from.
In all subjects, Price documented the changes in blood chemistry induced by root canals. He found that the disturbances of the normal levels of the chemicals of the blood were part of the general condition of root canaled teeth. He wrote,
When these conditions exist for an extended period, they tend definitely to contribute to the degenerative diseases, though they may exist as disturbances and measurable changes in the blood stream for months or years before the clinical symptoms become manifest.

“The ugly part of root canals is what happens within these tubules when a tooth dies. As the living cells necrose (rot) within the central pulp chamber, their extensions also necrose within their tubules. Although root canal therapy should completely obliterate and fill the main pulp chamber, (or chambers in teeth with multiple roots), it is impossible to fill the millions of microscopic tubules.
Bacteria from infected teeth or from the dental procedure itself can remain within the tubules, growing and multiplying. Because microbes can change their form and function in response to a changed microenvironment within the tubules they can go on living in spite of the altered oxygen and food supply. As they do so, they begin to produce various toxic chemicals that have been shown to be harmful to you and me. In fact some of these toxins can be especially toxic to specific organs and/or organ systems.”

"Dentists are the mad hatters of today!"

Brain fog and poor memory, gut issues, are often signs of mercury toxicity.

Mad hatter disease (or mad hatter syndrome) is related to hat making because they use felt. Historically felting work would require prolonged exposure to mercury vapours. Mercury is neurotoxic, and can lead to a number of symptoms including: confusion, emotional disturbance, short tempered, agitation, closed-mindedness, muscular weakness, kidney damage, tremors, insomnia, depression, and social phobias.
For these reasons, hatters that used to make hat some hundreds years ago, will go mad. They would literally lose their mind. Mercury is therefore responsible for mental decline, and “mental torture”.
Dentists are the mad hatters of today!

Root canal teeth is best taken out according to Openshaw. “It is better to have a tooth missing than having MS”.

A root canal tooth can look great and show no signs whatsoever, nor even showing on x-ray; however, it can be rotten and infecting the jaw and tissue around the tooth (like gangrene would).

Bacterial overgrowth in the mouth, from stores of toxic debris or from root canal teeth can travel to other part of the body and generate inflammation.
Oral inflammation can travel and deposit in the joints and other parts of the body according to Tom O’Brian (Functional Medicine expert).

“The bacteria in the mouth that they have identified to be quite high in the synovial fluid of arthritis patients, especially rheumatoid arthritis patients, the types of bacteria in the mouth, which are the ones you don’t want around too much. Everyone has a little but they are supposed to be kept in check by the other members of the 700 species in the mouth. So the vast majority are supposed to be there to protecting you but if you do not have the good guys in there the bad guys are taking over, and you get a little inflammation in your gums.
That means the tissue is very sensitive and paper thin.”

Brushing and/or flossing may damage the gum tissue further and you know that damage has been done when you are spitting a little blood with your toothpaste.

“When you are brushing or flossing, you open up these pathways and the bad bacteria that are colonising in the mouth is into systemic circulation. It is travelling through the bloodstream. It looks for new place to hangout. It love to hangout in the joint. You get inflammation in the joint and you get a diagnosis, 3–4 years later, of rheumatoid arthritis. And, you can trace it back to the colonies’ home in the mouth.”
“Residents in your mouth” also produce gases that are responsible for bad breath, a sign of “bad” oral health according to Dr O’Brian.

Autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, are all on the rise. Chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, pain, autoimmune disease are also occurring a lot more than 40–50 years ago.
In part, because we do not have enzymes to deactivate heavy metals.

“We are living in a very toxic world!"

Not only dental procedures expose you to heavy metal. It starts with car fumes and pollution, but also foods including raw fish. Sushi, for example, most often are made with farmed fish (cheaper), and not wild fish from clear water. Cheese also contains mercury.

Fluoride in toothpaste (and in some tap water) is also toxic – “never proven safe”, explains Mark McClure.

There are too many heavy metals in our body that all synergise.
Mercury and aluminium (the most heavy mineral present in the body, and brain) for example act synergistically to destroy even more brain cells. “We have great tissue studies on that. Basically, they take a little bit of mercury, similar to what is in vaccine, and put it in a culture dish with brain tissue and within 25 hours, may be, 40% of the cells are dead. They put the same amount of aluminium, that would be an adjuvant in the same vaccine, 20% of the cells are dead within 25 hours. Then, they put the same amount of aluminium and mercury together and the percentage is 100%. This is what I mean about synergetic effect.
"Mercury synergises with everything and gives it an exponential effect, this is why mercury is such a big problem. Perhaps, you do not have amalgam fillings but your mother most probably did.”

                 "All heavy metals accumulate!
You also breathe them"

How to prevent or treat heavy meatal toxicity?

To prevent heavy metal toxicity it is, therefore, vital to be educated.

Using a natural toothpaste is already a great start, as avoiding commercial mouthwashes (contain alcohol, dry and makes gum bleed),  and also using natural skincare and hair care products.

There are, in fact, different forms of mercury we are exposed to and that can accumulate in the himan body according to Chris Shade: “Methylmercury from fish, inorganic mercury from amalgams, also from the breakdown of fish, and Ethylmercury from vaccine.”

Testing can show that mercury overall is high; however, it may not test them separately, and is not an indicator of toxicity or, at the very least, retention of toxicity, whereas mercury is not excreted from the body.
For these reasons hair, blood and urine tests cannot be used as a measure of toxicity.

These forms of mercury must be individualised and assessed separately; how they circulate in the body and how they are excreted out of the body.
Mercury can also be passed on from the mother to the foetus and can be linked to “certain forms of autism”.

"Toxins are everywhere and impair neuroimmune function.

GMOs, pesticides and other chemicals also play a massive role"

How to address and prevent heavy metal toxicity

Oil pulling is proven to help fight bad bacteria and prevent decay. It can be done every morning by swishing coconut oil (as much as possible) for 10–15 minutes. It is more powerful than brushing and flossing.

Oil pulling originated in Ayurveda.
It is, in fact, part of the daily oil massage routine, including taking oil into the mouth, holding it and swishing it around the mouth for a minimum of 10 minutes, then gargling and spitting it out.

DO NOT SPIT COCONUT OIL DOWN YOUR DRAIN OR YOUR TOILET!!!
IT WILL CLOG THE PIPES AS IT COOLS DOWN.
SPIT THE OIL STRAIGHT INSIDE YOUR BIN!!!

Oil pulling is backed up by research and is proven to reduce bacterial number in the mouth all throughout the day. It can also be done using sesame seed oil.
Sesame seed oil used in this process is anti-Kapha and anti-Vata (the head is a Kapha part of the body), cleansing, helping to remove the catarrh mucus from the head sinuses, the nostrils and back of the throat.
Vata nourishes by retaining oil in the mouth (bones and teeth are considered Vata tissues) as it becomes absorbed by the tissues, strengthening the teeth, and is a very good treatment for gingivitis. People with a tendency for eroding gums, will find this practice indispensable.
Digestive health is also vital. Eating the right kind of food to promote healthy stomach juices, and keep oral bacteria in check. An anti-inflammatory diet may also be necessary, which must remove gluten from the diet (to prevent gut permeability).

Giving attention to body’s methylation pathways is a good indication of mercury toxicity as the body cannot detoxify it efficiently.
B vitamins are usually needed to optimally perform methylation, and several other nutrients and supplementing alone may not be enough. Some people cannot assimilate B vits or not use them efficiently enough, and methylation suffer.
Homocysteine is usually a great indicator for methylation pathways and there are several tests that can be done to assess levels.

If you have been asked to supplement with B vits, make sure they are in a form that the body can absorb and use. Often, they are labelled as methylated B vits.
Magnesium and zinc are also needed for methylation.

Methylation is also a natural detoxification pathway to deactivate hormones and excrete those no longer needed.

Chronic constipation may be responsible for bringing detoxified hormones and toxins back into circulation, waste stagnating for too long in the bowel.
The body, especially the liver, will have to detoxify the current load of toxins, waste and heavy metals, plus all that is brought back into circulation by compacted stools.

Glutathione, a very powerful antioxidant, can prevent damages occurring during detoxification, but also from the damage of free radicals. It is naturally produced by the body but depending on the person, supplementing may be necessary to bring adequate levels and remove mercury out of cell and out of the body.
Glutathione S-transferase is the molecule needed to conjugate and remove the mercury – but it needs magnesium and ATP “to push that mercury-glutathione conjugate from the inside of the cell to the outside of the cell.” It enters the blood, then the liver, the bile tract and the intestine – kidney, liver, GI filtering – then the bowel or urine. Chlorella can also assist this process.

DETOXIFYING is extremely dangerous when done without assistance from a qualified health practitioner and can bring out extreme free radical damage and damage to the "autonomic nerves", which control digestion, metabolism, heart rate, respiration rate, the parasympathetic versus sympathetic modes, blood flow to all organs.

It must be done by starting low (dosage) and slow in a time-on-time-off fashion.
3 days detox – 4 days off is what Doctor Shade recommends.

"Detox is done over a longer period of time, not a few days or weeks"

“INFLAMMATION IMPAIRS DETOX!” so this must be addressed before starting with a detox program, although, alkalising foods and anti-inflammatory foods are very often foods that also stimulate detoxification.
Brassicas, known as cruciferous vegetables are ideal foods, as are antioxidant-rich foods.

Fibre is also required for optimal elimination.
DETOX WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT IF ELIMINATION IS NOT OPTIMAL.

IN SEVERE CASES WHEN DETOXIFICATION IS NOT OPTIMAL, a qualified health practitioner may recommend Diindolymethane (when supplemental glutathione is not offering positive results).

NOT SLEEPING also impact on detoxification adds Mark McClure. “Your lymphatic system is not able to function nearly to its capacity and your melatonin is not going to be able to work. So your brain is eventually going to be toxic.”

Having my fillings taken out by a naturopathic dentist 10 years ago was a real turn around when it came to my health! I had a root canal done in 2004 that I seriously regret and now advise everyone I meet to do anything other than a root canal!

I totally understand where you re coming from Shania.

I never suspected amalgam fillings to be so dangerous to health and, to be honest, I was not even aware that they contained mercury.

This summit came at the right time indeed. I have just replaced two fillings about a week ago, and it took me 3 different dentists to finally have them removed and replaced with ceramic.
None of the dentists wanted to do it, or only to replace both with new "silver" fillings.
It made me so angry that, finally, the last dentist, I have seen, agreed to do it, but after my second visit.

I also discovered that one of the teeth had root canal and now I am really not happy about it. Not since learning all of this new information.

Loved this!!!! I particularly liked the Acupunture meridians and organ-teeth reflexes! I guess I’m biased given that I’m an acupuncture student. The large intestine and stomach meridians are particularly good for toothache 😉 Try acupoints Stomach 44 (between the 2nd and 3rd toes at the root of the web) and Large Intestine 1 (on the corner of the nail of the index finger, on the side closest to the thumb and at the base of the nail). Just press these points lightly and circle clockwise 😉

Do you know the costs to replace amalgam fillings? Also, is an implant the best alternative to root canal? Thank you

To the best of my knowledge, only silver fillings are covered, in part, by the NHS.
Any other tooth work is full price.
Amalgam filling such as « white » fillings cost £75-95.00
Ceramic crown or bridge is about £420.00
Implant start at £1,200.

Holistic dentists may require more equipment and take extra measures to prevent mercury ingestion and gases inhalation, and are, therefore, more expensive; however, it may be a safer option.
The process may also take longer.

I am currently researching bridges and implants and will update you as soon as I have found evidence-based information.
